The Complete Iden’s Solution

The traditional system for used car reconditioning and new car preparation at most dealerships is through an internal detail department and by use of multiple sublet reconditioning repair vendors. An internal detail department typically becomes the responsibility of a service manager who already has more than enough to manage with the rest of the service department. On top of the lack of spare time, detailing is usually not the expertise of a service manager, so training and maintaining a skilled detail staff can be difficult; not to mention it’s nearly impossible to staff for the fluctuating volume of the dealership. Alternatively, many dealerships have turned to subletting all of their detail work out to local detail shops. These shops can usually produce a better quality detail and it takes some of the management off the service manager’s plate, but you’re competing with their retail business and their customer details are usually top priority. You’re also still left managing the flow of those cars, making sure they’re done in the right order, keeping track of where they are (typically at multiple shops because one can’t keep up) and trying to manage the quality level and consistency of their work. Then there are also the logistical problems and liability risks involved in getting the cars to and from these off-site detail shops.

Once the detail is done, most cars go directly to the lot, so you’re selling cars on your front line that are only half way through the reconditioning process. You then have 4-6 different repair vendors coming on the lot, 1-3 times a week each to complete paintless dent repairs, paint, wheel and interior repairs, etc. This means probably 8-15 or more times a week, your used car manager or someone is looking over cars or a list to approve work for these vendors, and they’re all trying to get their turn to get the work done on your used cars. The result of this process is a lot of communication time spent with multiple people, a long turnaround time and inevitably cars either sold before all the work is completed, or sales opportunities missed because the cars don’t look as good as they should.
